When I worked full-time, my children would often call me and leave me a message because I was always in meetings. I was talking to a trucker at a gas station in Austin Texas and he got a phone call and it was his daughter. She was just getting home from school and video chatted with him. I made a comment that it must be hard being away from home so much and he said “Nah! I’m always there for them when they need me. Life is good!” Off he went with his coffee back out to the Open Road.

Hundred miles away from Austin,
Sign says San Antonio
Picture of his family on the dashboard,
It’s 22 hours home to Ontario
Hauling logs since ’86,
This route’s 5 days on the road
Shifting gears and radio stations,
He’s a husband and a father by phone
Chorus:
He’s on the open road,
Hauling a heavy load,
His dog is howlin’ to, songs on the radio
Hot coffee in his cup,
fuel tank is all filled up,
This truckin’ man loves the open road
Sun comes up on Saturday,
Kids wrapped ‘round his legs
His wife pours him coffee
as the dog runs ‘round the yard,
Cooks up Texas Brisket and eggs
Fill each other up with love each weekend,
Monday morning rolls around
Hug them tight, watch them wavin’ in the mirrors.
With the air horn blasting loud,
he puts the hammer down, Back to
Repeat Chorus
Bridge: As fence posts flash by,
Wonders if he worked 9 to 5
Would he have had a better life?
Then the telephone rings,
And he’s on the line, He’s there anytime
Repeat Chorus

Played “Open Road” for Jack for the first time live and he howled! It was classic. At the 6:00 minute mark.
This is a picture of me with my dog Smokey. He LOVED having his harness put on him. Somehow I think he knew he was going to get lots of attention and make us all a bunch of happy kids. He would sit by his harness hanging on the wall and run around until we put it on him.
He also howled at the sirens when they would go off at the fire hall that was behind our house. I sure do miss him. He was a great dog!
Does your dog howl? Tell me about it.
