Come Sit In My Chair… A Song of
Impact, Service and Community
My Dad is a Barber and hair stylist. We had a family business in the small town of Tweed, Ontario. Claude’s Hair Salon was a gathering place where locals would sit in his chair, share their stories, and receive a rejuvenating haircut! The Barber Shop was it’s own world to me and the salon still holds that charm for me to this day.
I wrote this song when my Dad had been a barber for 50 years. He continued to cut hair for many more years and while he has put the clippers away, he is still an important part of the town of Tweed. This song is in honour of not only my Dad but all those in the hair profession. With a tap of the hand on the back of the chair, signifying that it was your turn to “Come Sit In My Chair”
My father had a dream, before I was born,
To live life outside of the norm
So he took a wife, learned a new trade
As a barber, away from the farm.
Crossed the bridge to Tweed,
Back in ’64, a family in a new home
He opened a salon, across the street from Ron’s,
With his scissors, a clipper and comb
He said come sit in my chair,
And I’ll cut your hair and make you look grand
He said come sit in my chair,
And tell me your cares and I’ll understand,
I’ll understand
He cut Joe’s hair the day he was wed,
Then he styled Joe’s wife
When Joe’s kids were born, he cut their hair too,
Always a part of their life
The hair fell down, and he danced around the chair
As he crafted a style
The swish of the scissors, the Buzz of the clippers,
‘fore you knew it, a brand new profile
He said come sit in my chair,
And I’ll cut your hair and make you look grand
He said come sit in my chair,
And tell me your cares and I’ll understand,
I’ll understand
The Judo League, Kinsmen club, and Tweed Speedway
Racing skidoos across the lake, all for Tweed
He said come sit in my chair,
And I’ll cut your hair and make you look grand
He said come sit in my chair,
And tell me your cares and I’ll understand,
I’ll understand
He’s the Barber in town,
That French man’s just around and
He knows everyone’s name
