Canada’s Son – RIP Nathan Cirillo: A Fallen Soldier

War Memorial

As we drove along the 401 last Friday from Windsor to Ottawa for the concert, we noticed that there were people standing on an overpass.  As we continued on our journey, we saw overpass upon overpass filled with people, Canadian flags, firetrucks, ambulances all standing in the cold wind waiting for the procession carrying Cpl. Cirillo’s body home to Hamilton.  As we approached, Trenton, people were lined up on ramps, pulled over on the side of the road, a father and child both wearing red sitting in the grass waiting, motorcycles donning Canadian flags and military personnel in uniform.  Just before Belleville, all traffic on our side of the road slowed down and we saw the procession.

It was humbling, yet at the same time, we were all so touched and proud of all of the people lining the Highway of Heroes to pay their respects.

Nathan stood at attention while guarding the memorial.  On Saturday, we drove by the War Memorial and were astounded by the number of people who had gathered there to pay their respects and in the pouring rain.  It did not matter, they stood as Cirillo did.  As we played I Soldier On Saturday night, the song had new meaning.  For more information on how to help soldiers families, see www.soldieron.ca.
