I Wish… A song of regret and yearning

Official Video: August 17, 2019

As a parent, you do the best you can for your children. Every parent wants their children’s lives to be happier, healthier and better than theirs was. But it isn’t that simple. No matter how hard you try, history has a way of repeating itself sometimes. The train goes off the track. And all you can do is hope your family’s roots are strong enough to hold.

Song Lyrics

I Wish
©Francine Honey (SOCAN)

The soles of my feet are scarred
from walking on egg shells
You don’t see the battered hearts,
that have been through hell
Where lifetimes of not good enoughs
are worn like armour
We’d never see it coming
Like a freight train jumping off the tracks

Chorus:
I wish, I wish, I wish
We could go back, re-plant the garden
We would be beautiful flowers
I wish

Looking back at the rows in our family garden
Where flowers try to grow between empty bottles
Parents do what they can to make life better
They never saw it coming
Like a freight train jumping off the tracks

Repeat Chorus

Bridge:
Took years to clear all the glass,
Shattered in my path
Sowed some seeds of my own
Love how those flowers have grown
There were things I didn’t see coming
I know their roots are strong enough
I couldn’t stop the damage from being done

Repeat Chorus
I wish, I wish, I wish

  1. Yes as parents there is always something we look back on wishing we did it different. But I feel we all learn and become stronger. The most important thing we can give our children is our LOVE. Thanks for another wonderful song.

  2. true is true…we cover up the things that are broken and hope for flowers to grow…plant when and where we can and pray for some sunshine between the rain so they can grow. bravo Francine!

  3. Wow this one sure hits home! My family tree is full of challenging fruits! And you know a little if the story of my son Rob and I definitely wish I could go back and replant that garden. But I also know there isn’t much I could have done differently because I had to make the choices I made. Thanks for another wonderful song.

  4. Honestly, Francine ~ how is it you have this knack in songwriting of causing my life (in various bits & pieces) to flash before my eyes?

Reflective, for sure. That “not good enough” thing, right? Just when you think you’ve broken through & are living more in the healing place? Still, would rather experience the feelings than remain in “silenced & numb” ~ still dreaming of becoming.

  5. Oh those damn repeats!
This song, like many of the others, have caused me to pause and feel. Not always knowing what I am feeling, but that’s OK. In another moment of time I might I might just get it. And when I do I’ll reflect on where it belongs. With me still or to leave it behind.
    Thank you Francine, thank you!
