Can’t Break Through To You… A song of trauma, love and suffering

Official Video: Released September 28th, 2019

This song was inspired by conversations with a soldier and the wife of another soldier. This is real life and what real love looks like for people dealing with mental illness. Remember that you are not alone and there are people there to hold your hand and stay with you through it all.

Song Lyrics

Can’t Break Through To You
©Francine Honey (SOCAN)

The curtains are always open, in our shower stall
You’re in there trying to wash the war away
The water’s running cold, and your skin’s rubbed raw
I wish you could erase, all the things you saw

Chorus: I can’t break through to you, no matter how I try
I can’t get to you, even when I cry
Tears are falling, on a heart of stone
I can’t break through to you, When you comin’ home

You must be in the trenches again tonight
You’ve pulled your pillow down under your arm
Sleeping with your rifle ready for a fight
You push me away when I try to hold you tight

Repeat Chorus

Bridge:
I’ll be here, “in sickness and in health”
Don’t know how to help you,
but I’m here with you in Hell
So I hold your hand, and pray we find a way, ‘cause

Repeat Chorus

How do I break through? I want you home.

  1. I watched your video with the little guy I look after he was quite intense listening to the whole song. We owe much to all veterans and hope that they can overcome their demons.

  2. Oh Francine. Soldering today or yesterday (WW1, WW2, and too many others) and struggling to come home; the hurts, the fears, the washing away that which won’t go away. And those who love you . . .

  3. “This is real life and what real love looks like for people dealing with mental illness. Remember that you are not alone and there are people there to hold your hand and stay with you through it all.”

Having PTSD myself brings resonance with this song premise, this song, this perpetuality of ache beneath the surface, this being closed off inside while longing for connection . . . agree with all commenters, Dale in particular “This is a story that needs to be shared” & “This song will relate easily to lots of people”

Grateful for your continuous practice of emotional listening, Francine; I know you draw to my surface deep things that need to be released. You are such a blessing, girlfriend.

  4. How heart rendering. Mental health needs more people to tell stories it also needs more people helping and caring. God bless the military everywhere.

  5. Such an emotional song. And well done.So many veterans and family will understand and relate to all those words . Thank you for sharing. xo can’t wait what tommorrow brings.

  6. Francine .. Last Comment you know how much I love Guitars .it was always fun for me to see what guitar was being used for each song in all the videos ..db

    1. Thanks Dale. I am so glad you enjoyed the way it was released. I was hoping you would enjoy it. I believe Will Kimbrough used his 62 Ginson and slide on this song. That man can make any guitar sound like anything!!! No pedal steel but it has that sound. Thanks for listening and for your friendship.

  7. Wow, such an emotional song. Brings back memories of when we met the bus from Petawawa going through Tweed. The bus full of soldiers and they would stop at the Legion on their way to to the base in Trenton. They were flying out to Afghanistan….it was so heart wrenching to see all these men and women leaving to fight for our country. So proud and thankful to each and every one on them!
    Love this song!
